The "savings" would more than likely be lost in taxation and drug purity inspection. It would be a reasonable and much more cost effective measure to use rehabilitation centers for drug users tha to jail or imprison them. Be careful with statistics however, some of that 80% in prison for drug offenses are there for smugglind and selling drugs. The Taliban's financing is somewhat inflated, especially now that their main source of cash has been cut off. The Taliban were financed by the U.S. to fight the fromer Soviet Union.

1) Prices would crash because they are currently high due to the hazard / cost of running the underground.
2) The cartels would have to find new employment
3) There would be a temporary rise in overdoses, then stabilize at the population normal.
Currently the cartels OPPOSE legalization because that would kill the millions of $$ income they get every year.
But for what would happen ? Check Amsterdam for a comparison . . .

You also forget about the turf wars resulting from more drugs on the streets...not that this would happen but it could so you also have to think that crime could go up because of all the fighting....you are just assuming because they could get cheap drugs that they wouldnt commit crime...but in reality you dont know...

First of all, they would not be cheap. People would rob and steal to get them just like they do for liquor or cigarettes. Liquor stores get broken into all the time as it is and it's not near as addictive as crack or heroin. The government just raised taxes on cigs by about a dollar a pack. People would go broke to stay high...they already do. If it were legal, more people would get hooked as there would be nothing to stop them from getting it...no consequences-legally speaking.
