A tiki is a carved talisman, usually of a grotesque head, common to the Polynesian cultures of the Pacific Ocean. These talismans take the form of large carved wooden heads and also smaller wooden carved heads used as markers at the edge of sacred sites.

The term tiki is also often erroneously used to refer to the carved greenstone or bone pendants worn as necklaces by the Maori of New Zealand. These are correctly called hei-tiki (qv). "Tiki" can be translated as "first man" as in the first man on earth.

The Tiki is also sold as good luck charm carved in natural Jade gemstone also found in New Zealand.

The Tiki effigy is meant to look frightening to ward off evil spirit I believe.

Tiki's are an ancient, mythical god of the ancient Hawaiians. They range in all sizes from the very small, large-eyed, gaping rictus to the ancient oracles of Hawaiian 'kahunas' perched on volcanic cliffs, carved wooden tikis peeking thru the rainforest, mystic caves along the coast and great tiki god temples of sacrifice were located amongst Hawaiian tiki villages and islands.
There are 4 Major Tiki gods:
Ku - Ancient tiki god of War. He was the husband of the goddess Hina. Ku means 'standing up'; Hina means 'fallen down'.
Lono - Ancient tiki god of Fertility and Peace. Lono came to earth on a rainbow to marry Laka.
Kane - Ancient tiki god of Light and Life. Kane was husband to Haumea. He created the sky, earth and upper heaven.
Kanaloa - Ancient Tiki god of the Sea. Kanaloa is the twin brother of Kane and they share much duality.
Related tiki deities are:
Tangaroa/Tiki/Waka: guardian/protector mask; they have pierced eyes and mouth, with Moko (tattoos) of a warrior chief.
Tagaloa in Samoa
Ta'aroa in Tahiti
