Dominic Conti (1874-1954) had a grocery store in new jersey where he sold the sandwiches. One day he in 1927 he went to see the Holland I a submarine that was on displayed out of water in Westside Park. "It looks like the sandwich I sell at my store." Conti said. So this is why he called it a submarine sandwich.
* In 1927, the first experimental 14-foot submarine, called Holland I, was recovered and salvaged from the Passaic River. The Holland I was built in 1878 by John Holland (1841-1914). The submarine hull was scuttled in 1878 in the Upper Passaic River after an exhaustive series of test and everything of value was removed. Holland figured that it was cheaper to start afresh rather than take her out of the water and put her in storage. The hull is currently on display at the Paterson Museum in Paterson, New Jersey.

Home town ..... The whole word was used for quite some time but then shortened. Submarine Sandwich. Then Sub. Present town .... the influx of northerners moving south has caused a blend of most of all possibilities. Sub most common. Grinder next common. I think a poor boy isn't a sub around here. I really don't know what it is supposed to represent here. One Place has Grinder for the toasted roll. and Hoagie for the non toasted. That made some sence after I figured it out. {they claim to be a Philly Deli} But I know a Philly Deli and that's no Philly Deli. Now I'm going to make a Dagwood.

Exactly my question...when I was younger, my swim coach always asked me if I would go get "subs" for everyone and I would just look at him and shake my head! I think it's annoying!
