I am a total good girl, I never wear much make-up just mascara and eyeliner.. thing is I apply my eyeliner (black pencil) pretty thick... top and bottom lash...

I thought this looked fine, since on the bottom lash I only go as far as my eyelashes do, tryin to avoid looking like a racoon... but some horrible girl commented this week... and so I've been wondering, what do people think of thick black eyeliner...? I'm not blonde or anything, I'm a brunette with fairly normal, slightly tanned-ish skin... (which I sort of think looks a bit yellow in winter, but nothing I can do about that)

So do people think this always looks awful or can it work?

By the way, when I say really thick - it's a bit of an exagerration.. 'I don't do the goth/emo type of thing... it's just a bit thicker than natural looking

I think makeup is like another accessory. Not everyone willapprove of what you wear and how you wear it but if you like it, who cares? I wear thicker eyeliner when i go out clubbing because i think it looks good and more glamorous. I dont think theres anything wrong with wearing it during the day times too. It just emphasises your eyes which is the first thing people notice anyway. I saw a comment to this question which said that people associate unnatural makeup with thick eyeliner. I disagree, i think unnatual makeup is associated with too much foundation, cakey powder, excessive blusher or seeable lipliner.

If your eye makeup makes you feel good and confident then keep it. Thats the point of make up anyways. Fair enough its meant to enhance your beauty, not mask it but eyeliner is one of those things that people can get away with. it looks funkier and sexier. Keep it- it makes you-you!!

Dark eyes are really hip right now. But it can be difficult to pull off if not done right. You really need a good, high quality brush to apply it, good, stay-put eyeliner, and some matching eye shadow. The trick is to not use so much eyeliner, but instead use the brush to apply the shadow on your lids and under your eyes. This will give you the smokey look, without all of the harshness of just plain eyeliner. If you can find a close-up of a celeb, and copy the look for yourself, you could make it look amazing. Think Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, or Heidi Klum.

When people speak of 'too much makeup', they're generally referring to something most unnatural like a hoard of black eyeliner. Eyeliner is ok, but only when it's used sparingly. The thiner the line, the more naturally it will define your eye's shape. Using a thick line also makes eyes appear smaller (not good). Try using less eyeliner and buy something that can substitute for its deprivation. Maybe a pretty blush or highlighter? Some taupe eyeshadow to go along with that mascara? Whatever you choose... just remember that when it's all said and done, you should still look like yourself with a full face of makeup.

Well, the 'clean look' is in at the moment, and maybe you can try making the eyeliner a little less thick or just applying it to the bottom.
I have nothing against eyeliner, but too much of it is just not attractive in my opinion. It also depends on where you wear it. Leave the smoky eyes for special events like parties and such.

I just think...if you wear thick black liner on a daily basis, what do you do when you go out for parties or special occasions? I think for day, less is more. Try doing maybe a thin line only on the bottom, and then using a smudger to smoke it up a bit. Or try using liquid to create a thicker line on the top lid, with no line on the bottom for classy Audrey Hepburn eyes. There are just SO many things you can do with makeup...why limit yourself to only thick black lines? Experiment!!!! You can do a lot with only that black pencil... just try different techniques! Thick lines, thin lines, smudged lines, only on top, only on bottom, all together...mix it up, have fun with it!!!!

Since your pretty young I wouldn't go for top and bottom lashes and very thick. If you still want to try a dark color since your a brunette you should try brown eyeliner most girls only go for brown for their eyebrows but i guess you can.

I did that for years and always thought I looked great with it and sick without it. (People would even tell me my eyes look great...now I realize they meant it, but it meant they never saw anything else about me except for my eyes.) But for years that was kinda "the in thing". It's the out thing now. Eyes stand out with that but now it's considered "standing out like a sore thumb". The "in thing" now is a more "natural beauty look". A great suggestion is to go to a professional make up counter like Estee Lauder or something and get a free make over. You don't have to buy one thing but ask for the more natural beauty day look that'll look good no matter what colors you use. Notice the colors they use and write them down (or they'll even write them down for you). They'll even sketch out how to do eye shadows etc on a diagram and let you have it to go by at home. Sometimes they'll use a bronze looking liner or gray or teal. Then after you get the day look done ask them to go one step further for the "night look" for dates, dinner, or whatever. They'll play up on your features showing you just how to do it. I'm sure your eyes look good how you do them but statistically speaking it means people see your eyes only from across the room and the closer they get the worse it is. I never thought I'd be one telling this because it sounds like you do your eyes like I did mine for years. Happy new look! Another good thing would be for someone you know to take a real close up photo of just your face as you do it then one of your face after you have it professionally done. The look will be an adjustment for you...you'll feel like you don't even look like you without the eyeliner... Just remember...it's the new, best you! After awhile you'll be able to look at those 2 photos and look at yourself in the mirror and you will realize you were overplaying your eyes and how goregous you look with the new look. Believe me...I did and never would've dreamed I'd feel that way.

I personally don't like this look an anyone. It is outdated and unnatural. As I tell my teen daughter - make up is supposed to enhance your natural beauty, not make you look like a stage performer.

I like color, so my suggestions will involve using colors that complent your eyes and skin tone. Brunnettes with brown eyes look good in violet/berry shades and some greens, but be careful choosing the greens or your skin will look REALLY yellow. If y ou have a different eye color, choose something on the opposite side of the color wheel to enhance your eye color.
Try before you buy when possible.

Try using a navy blue eyeshow, applied with a wet liner brush. The navy blue will make the whites of your eyes look whiter.

Buy an angled shadow brush and use it to apply a line of color on your lash line, then smudge upward, to soften the effect. This looks fab in a violet or dark berry shade when wearing denim.

Good luck, and have fun with COLOR.

if you have almond eyes, i would go for a thinner pencil on the inside of the bottom. Applying it on top and bottom, makes my eyes feel weighed down but I don't know about you, i'd try a thinner pencil and a nice shade of pink on your eyelids.
