They took possesion of some of the former German colonies in the Pacific. In China they assumed control of the German colony of Tsingtoa.
Whereas prior to 1918 there were five major imperial powers in the Pacific: USA, Britian, France, Germany, and Japan after 1918 there were four and one of them France,concentrated its dominion in south east asia. This left only three major sea powers left in the Pacific.

Well, Japan kinda did it's own thing for that period, just militarising and building up an army to take on the world. I'm not sure of any specific examples of Japan benefiting from outside influences during this period. I guess as a victor of WWI they had made friends with other great nations, gaining some power and influence.
