What sort of faults? Is it freezing, restarting or what? Formatting will only remove all the data on the hard disk, and will only help if the problem is NOT hardware related.
If you have the CDs that came with your laptop - called restore or setup CD or something like that, it is going to be easy to format and reinstall the operating system. If you are not having the CD, then you will need to get the CD containing WindowsXP or whatever version of Windows you intend to install. When you have the disk, you put it into the CD-ROM drive. One more task and you are ready to go.
You have to make the laptop boot from the CD. How? You change the boot order from the BIOS setup. I dont know the model of your laptop so I can't give you the exact details of how to get into the setup and make your computer boot from the CD-ROM drive. If you can provide the exact make and model, then I may be able to tell you just how.
If you are able to make it boot from the CD then it will automatically begin Windows setup and then you can specify you want the hard disk formatted by setup.

Well if you want to format that is up to you. But if you do than there should have been a windows CD that came with your laptop. Just pop that in and it should run. But remeber the only problem with formating is you lose ALL your data. So backup anything you need to before reformating. Good luck.

Should have come with some kind of restore utility.
To do it manually, you need to make sure you have all your drivers. Some companies put them on a seperate partition.
It would help to know what OS you have, and what your problems are. Often, a format can be avoided.
