I blay bass in a blues band and our guitar player uses a Gibson Les paul. If you watch different bands alot you will notice that most rock, classic rock and/or blues cover bands have a lead guitar playing a Gibson Les Paul and most country cover bands are using a Fender Strat.
The Les Paul has a really "full" sound and the strings are set closer to the neck for fast fingering while the Strat has a chicken picken sound, which is optimal for country music.

As for versatility I would say the Fender Stratocaster. If your looking for the fattest tone around with tons of sustain look no further than a Gibson Les Paul. If you can afford only one get the Strat. A Strat does a decent Les Paul imitation but a Les Paul can't imitate a Strat. I guess I'm lucky I own and play both.

Personally a Les Paul because of the "fat" sound those humbuckers give you, but I have to admit that a Fender Stratocaster is more versatile.

Well, for just plain phenominal guitar solos who was better than Eddie Van Halen? "Wo, wo, wo, Jamie's cryin."
Oh, well and Jimi Hendrix just kind of goes without saying.
And although Yes was better know for its synthesizer sounds, I have the throw them into the mix. Steve Howe was truly a genius.
