That rather depends were you live. In many 3rd world countries people exist on around a dollar a day which would mean $400 a year should more than cover it. In the UK a couple would probably need around £2500 a month so £30k (around £60k dollar at recent exchange rates) a year to live on.
If you want to know what you personally need to live on then for the next 2 or 3 months right down every penny you spend as you spend it. Don't forget anything, even a cup of coffee or a newspaper, then you should be able to work out more or less what you spend each month and on what.

Some really great answers to this question. Congratulations to all.
The only word not explained was "normal". To many people, "normal" means dinner out a couple of times a week, theatre tickets, a baseball or football game, a visit to the Gap for a few new duds and a re-plenishment of your stock of wine, But to me and many others, "normal" means "adequate food, clothing and rainment" or,in other words, enough food, acceptable clothing and a roof over our head". We feel no need for fancy items, steer clear of $50 meals at "haut cusine" restaurants, buy clothes from Target and never from Tommy Hilfiger or the Gap.
Millions of people in the western world live happily and frugally.
There never was a home more filled with love and laughter than ours in the last 20 years and on an income less than $20 K a year.
The kids wore beautiful clothes, bought from consignment stores, food consisted of less expensive cuts of meat which are just as tender if you use a slow cooker. In house ice cream is just as tasty as HagenDaz except that it has 1/4 of the butter fat, yesterday bread at two for a dollar is just as nutricious as fresh bread at three times the price. In other words a family can live "normally" on a very meagre income, if they plan carefully and avoid the money traps.

Probably about $50,000 to have house, car, and comfortable life.
But a reasonable, livable salary is $32,000 below that is a little hard....i make $28,000 and I am on a tight budget. No extras, no vacations, etc...

depends largely on where you live. for example here in ohio i pay a five hudred dollar a month mortgage..in la that wouldnt buy you an outhouse. usually wages reflect location so you need to be more specific.
