First of all they are BOTH DUAL core chips.
But the D805 is more of a patched up dual core chip. By design it's not as fast as the athlon 64 x2 4200.
Hence, the athlon 64 x2 4200 is the better chip.
But note that if you are interested in overclocking, the D805 has proved to be an extremely good choice and will beat the athlon 64 x2 4200, in most benchmarks when overclocked at 3.8Ghz.
Check it out : http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/05/10/dual_41_ghz_cores/
But I would still suggest you buy this chip: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300.
Will destroy both chips.

An athlon 64 x 4200 is definetely better. It may have less GHz but it is by far a better processor. An athlon 64 x2 4200 is dual core. A pentium d805 is not. If you want the better processor between these two got athlon 64 x2 4200. Just make sure your motherboard can hold the processor you are getting.

they are both dual core people -
however the AMD multi-tasks better and provides more power - it's architecture is second to none excpet for the new Core 2 Duo processors from intel - you may wanna consider a Core 2 Duo E6300 - but the price is ~$200 so it may be above your budget.
But the x2 4200 all the way
cheers

in your case AMD is better, and if u could afford get a Core2 Duo coz thats the best performer and gamer out there, overclocks and exeeds the expectations, sure it is the basic for a multimedia powerhouse that you could build now.
