The UN was established as a reaction on WW2. The most important nations, such as the US, were regarded as being the most important powers in the world and received veto power. Veto power has been extended to other nations over the years.

I agree, the world has changed significantly and I do not think it is fair that some nations have veto power as it has been proven that these countries use it not to serve the world but to serve their own interests or the interests of their direct friends ( US and Israel, for example). Or not to get involved into a conflict, the genocide in Rwanda for instance.

At the United Nations, the 'majors', USA, UK, Russia, France and China all have the 'veto'. Reason: these are the nations which created the UN. They form the Security Council. Don't worry, they seldom agree on anything.

If you mean the Veto power in the UN, this has to do with the major powers after WWII that originally set up the United Nations, and the UN security council in the first place.
