A friend of mine has a whirpool tub & sometimes the pump will cut in & run even when the tub is not in use. It will stay running until you turn it off with the switch. Is there someone who has had a similar problem that might know how to fix it.

The first thing I would check is the pump switch. Most whirlpools use air actuated swithches the prevent risk of electric shock. If a crack forms and allows air to leak, you could see this probem. I would deal with it quickly, because running a pump dry will lead to pump damage.

If this is a bathtub, there is a problem for sure... no water, limited motor life (and real scary if you're on the loo and she fires up beside you... heart attack city!)... if this is a hot tub type of thing, it is the circulation motor and can be controlled to time in and out. Check the instruction book and if you don't have one, contact a dealer for the type you have and find out where to change the cycle time of the circulation cycle... good luck!
