I've been asked to write an essay regarding this issue ----

"Tourism is a multibillion-dollar industry that sustains economic development. But some people think that it causes damage to the local environment and culture"

What I need to do is discuss both sides of the subject and support the arguments with examples and relevant evidence using my own knowledge. And I have no idea how to work this out. I am very unfamiliar with this issue and can't think of a single idea that related to the subject.

Let me know your opinions, so I have something to write. Or, someone recommend me a webside where I can find some idea or material that related to this subject.

I have only a few hours left and my teacher might punish me. So, PLEASE.... HELP!!! thanks a lot

Look into case studies of places like London, UK, cities in China and popular tourist spots such as Hawaii, Maldives etc.

There's alot to write, don't worry! Breathe deep and finish your essay!

Just write about how economic development spurs businesses to buy up land, resulting in deforestation or demolition of ancient sites. This in turn erodes local culture and lifestyle (use Amazon rainforest example) And then how in order to build seaside developments eg hotels, resorts, it resulted in beach erosion and destruction of habitats such as mangroves (when they fill up swamps with sand as land reclamtion)

Then go into how lots of businesses also contribute towards HELPING in the conservation of the environment, such as those into eco-tourism in recent years, like in the Maldives, and theGalapagos, they use tourist dollars to channel towards research projects and save the enviroment.

So tourism is like a coin with both sides. GOOD LUCK!

Tourists litter and destroy local culture (not willing to try new things so the country they are visting has to provide fish and chips or whatever) The large hotels ruin beaches as well as clubbing keeps locals awake. The hotels are usually cheap and shabby they ruin the skyline.

Also tourists can take the mick out of local traditions or even ruin them. The only advantage is money directly and indirectly eg selling food.

Most hotels are owned by countries foreign to the one where the resort is built so the country with the hotel actually gets very little money.

Well it does bring in the green stuff ( money), but then local people of that place try to make a few easy bucks by selling things at a high price, businessmen not to be left behind, build hotels and resorts for them and to do this, they destroy hills and mountains, cut down trees. The tourists also leave dirt behind making the place untidy, underdeveloped places are shocked by the openness of the tourists from developed places.

A good number of tourists visiting a place offers economic benefits. It's an opportunity but it also poses a threat to the place. Proper management and control of tourists is an issue faced by almost any country with....blahblahblah...
