I posted this as a 'thought' on my 360 and a member suggested that I post it here. I'm curious where this will go...

I think that in person people use the outward appearance more as a determining factor, whereas here we use essentially our minds. Some people either are afraid to talk to another for reasons as they are male, female, young, old, how they dress or any other contributing factor before we even give them the time to learn WHO they are not WHAT they are. Here none of that matters.

There have many good answers here and I agree with a lot of them. Appearance, social status, race, none of these are actually seen on the internet. What I haven't seen anyone post is body language. You cannot see that on the net either, but when you meet a someone in person, body language along with everything else stated above plays a big role in what people think and how they perceive you.

I think it's because we don't have the body language and other visual cues to change our perceptions.
We have to communicate our thoughts through the written word. This can lead to a greater meeting of minds.
For instance, I've always been partial to dark hair, but my best on-line friend is blonde. I never would have thought to speak to her if I met her in person, but by meeting here I've come to the conclusion that looks alone are the worst way to judge a person. It's the thoughts and feelings that count.
That's one reason I like using a photo of my dog. A photo of me or an avatar that looks too much like me might not appeal to somebody, but a goofy looking bloodhound is liked by most.

I've thought the same thing. I think it's because you are completely annonymous, and if anything is said that may offend, it doesn't matter because you'll never know that person anyway. That makes people choose their words more carefully face to face, and be not as open, probly more reserved. I think people are very careful about appearances and not offending anyone in person whereas on the internet there's none of that. There's more accountability in person.

Because you can afford to let your guard down! And to be someone else.

It's a nice way of experimenting with who you are as a person - gauging the response on the different personalities that you create - and then eventually (hopefully!) applying the best persona to your real life!

In this respect - I think a balanced 'diet' of internet and reality is a great thing for everyone to have!

As soon as you get on the computer you automatically have something in common with a lot of other people, a love of the internet. The boundaries of where you live are gone, you're automatically in the same time zone and location as everyone else. Your initial physical shyness is removed since people can't see you. It doesn't matter if you're rich or poor, as long as you've got a keyboard, CPU and monitor you can log in.

Alot of people have this fantasy about what a person they will meet will be like and then when they do meet there is great disappointment, so why even bother? I know that turned me off last year when I tried to meet people from online. What a drag. Sorry, hope that does not bring you down, just a true story.

When you first meet someone, and yes, everyone does this; you already get a picture in your head of how they are. When you meet someone online, you get to make up your own picture. When you have been talking to someone for a long time, you get to know their personality. Are they quick witted? Can they spell...etc. Those things say a lot about a person. You are not getting caught up in the outward appearance. That being said, do people lie on the computer....YES. But as I said, if you talked to them for a very long time, you get a pretty good picture of their personality.

Unfortunatly too many people are phony online. I think that's why some are able to make friends so easily. Another thing is that it's also easier to be able to talk. You don't have to worry about being judged by the way the look or talk. It's nice not being judged.

On the Internet, it's easier just to be yourself, not worrying how you look or if you fit in any particular group.
On the other hand, a person can be who they are not, and that is why we must be cautious in regards to information given here.
