Marriage was first instituted to show publicly the ownership of a woman by a man. Way back in history, women of any kind were considered chattel or property of the man. Even today this is true in some societies. Women had/have no rights, only men.

Today, marriage is only a legal formality for tax and other benefits not afforded to those not "legally" married. That is the real reason behind same sex marriages; benefits. If all people, men, women, and children of either sex, were given the same benefits, single or married there would be no legal need for marriage.

This ownership thing has caused many a fight, injury, and death because it breeds jealousy, just like the "cheating" term thrown around...it implies ownership. One can own a car or a home or what have you in material things but no one should have the right to own another person for any reason, male or female. Women as well as men for some reason believe if they are in a relationship with someone they have total control over them, if one happens to have another relationship with someone else it is called cheating which implies ownership of the other person.

Marriage is only relevant for benefits.

It should not be eradicated, it should be harder to do - in other words, people should have to prove that they're mature enough to handle a marriage to get a license, much in the same way we have to prove that we can drive to get a license to drive.

No, marriage should not be eradicated. Traditional marriage (one man to one woman) is the cornerstone and foundation for (western) society and its propagation.

I sometimes have the same sentiments, however between two loving individuals who are committed to one another it is a beautiful thing. To be in love and have that same love returned is like nothing in this world.

I believe you are right. I don't know very many if any happily married couples. I don't believe people were meant to be strapped to one person for eternity.
