You don't need the recovery CD - all Dell Laptops have a partition on the hard drive which contains the entire OS. When you reboot,go into the BIOS, just change the drive from which the Laptop boots (I even think there's something there which will allow you to restore - could be wrong!!!).
Why not try www.dell.co.uk - you obviously have internet access or you wouldn't have been able to post the question !!!!

It should have come with CD's labeled "Restore Disk - OS" and usually "1 of 2", "2 of 2" etc. There is usually also at least one "Application Restore" Disk.
Put the Restore OS disk 1 of x in the laptop, and reboot. If you see a message that says "Press any key to boot from CD" press a key. The restore program will begin, and will prompt you for the other CD's as it needs them.
If you don't have any of these restore disks anymore, Dell will provide them at a cost - I think they're charging $10 now, but I could be off on the price.

Simply insert your Windows XP recovery CD, which you should have recieved with the laptop. Restart the computer, then press any key to boot from CD (it will tell you when to do this). Then, it just happens. Your hard disk will be wiped of all data and windows xp will reload just as the original when it came out the box.
BACKUP FILES YOU WANT TO KEEP ONTO A CD. The hard disk loses ALL your files.
You may also have to reinstall drivers for your sound and graphics using a separate CD that Dell provided you. But maybe not, I don't know.

Normally, you should have a set of recovery CD's to do this.
You would boot from the CD (might need a change to the Boot settings in the BIOS first so the CD is first in line.
If you don't have the CD's, Dell might be able to supply new ones for a small charge.

If it's WindowsXP & the PC didn't come with a disc, backup ALL the files from windows to one or two dvd's, then search for I386 using the search tool in windows. You will need to enable showing of the hidden files in the advanced options of the search tool. Then open the folder that has close to 7000 files in it. Double click on win32.exe (or winnt.exe if that doesn't load up the windows setup). The reason you need to backup all your windows files is so that you can install the drivers again after re-installing windows & rebooting (turning the pc off & then on again). When you need to do so, just insert one of the dvd's & go into system, device manager, anything withan exclamation mark on it will need drivers installing, so click on them & click properties, drivers, update driver, click the D:\ drive or whatever drive your DVD Drive is as the search location. It will find the drivers automatically, then just follow the next few basic instructions that it gives you. Then you could go into the system recovery wizard from the start menu & create a system restore backup point incase you want to set it back again in future.
