I buy flannel lined "Driver" gloves. These are leather gloves with a flannel lining for warmth. These aren't warm enough for say skiing, but are excellent for active work.

The leather takes a beating and lasts a long time. Hardware stores have these, about $9 to $15 a pair.

Two pair of 99c brown jersey gloves are about the warmest thing you can wear and still have some dexterity.

Might try some waterproofer if you're working where it's wet.
