My boyfriend went into the bank and complained and demanded to see how much they had taken off of him. It was about £900. So he said he'd take them to court. One of the customer advisors said she'd investigate. He got sent a letter saying that they felt teir charges were fair and lawful (he disagreed), s then they said they'd refund him £310, which we took as we were skint. This took about a month in total (we got the money the same day they offered it). If he'd pushed for longer, they woul have suggested a second, larger amount, and if we'd said no we then could have taken them to a small claims court. But we were happy with the £300 anyway, and we got that wthout much hassle.
If you go in and you know the law then you should be oK, b check out this site for info and help:

p.s. the law is that charges have to be a true reflection of the cost to the bank to send the letter. any profit made from charges is illegal. Also, don't be afraid to face the bank and demand your money back - they know they're in the wrong, hence why they will settle just before it gets to court. If it did ever get to court, they'd lose and then they'd have to give everyone all their money back!

There was a guy on the news this week that sued Bank of Scotland for unfair charges. As they never responded to the court summons (or something) he took the bailliffs into the local branch and started taking computers and even cash draw. THe manager promptly paid up. Classic.

Yes I have. so long as you are not relying on your overdraft or have just got one account, threaten to take your bank to small claims court. It will always be cheaper for the bank to refund charges than proceed through the courts.
good luck.

I've never had to do it, but from what I have read on the internet Halifax is one of the hardest banks to get your fees back.

most bank charges are their way of punishing customers who take the mic. for example a charge for going overdrawn, do you blame them for charging you? you are using their money not your own when you go overdrawn.
