Yes, Initially few get very depressed when their job is eliminated. Especially those employees who were very loyal to their company get more depressed in this case.
I suggest Consulting a right option and the only problem is that they dont make an effort to CHANGE their old habits. There are lot of opportunities around which we dont know, but we have not made any effort to try.
So now stop worrying and being depressed. Being depressed would only create a negative and sad atmosphere at home. I am sure as long as he makes an effort and gives his best shot at any interview he can be as happy as he was in his next job.

Sorry this happened to you...welcome to the club. You struggle and look for work that you have no experience in, other than a good work record from your old employer.
It's very difficult and happening everywhere. I live in Michigan where it is hitting people the hardest. Check your local Social Services for help...many people have done this to survive through until they find another job. Don't let pride get in the way. You have contributed for many years, it's what it's there for.
Diligently seek employment through employment services headed by your State or private organizations. Make "looking" your full time job now. Talk to everyone that you can about the situation, many jobs have come to me through "word of mouth".
Consider moving to another area or state (even though hard on the family), it will work out.
My heart goes out to you, and I wish you the best.

Do u have savings.? Try to be more frugal in ur daily spendings..
At 50, normally there is not much choice.
Try reading the newspapers, at the job column..it helps.
Or try to ask friends for recommendation.
You can't be picky about the job too..coz u still have a wife and kids to feed..
Try to look at the bright side and b positive..coz u still have ur loved ones by ur side.
This is just a temporary phase.
so long as u hold a job and earn a monthly, stable income again,
everything wil be fine again..
There is always a solution to every problem..If u have any emotional breakdown, pls try to seek medical help asap..
Do not alienate yourself from friends or family..
It's difficult, but try to understand that things cud have been worst..

Tough place to be, Finding a job isn't going to be the hard part, finding a job with a living wage might be though. Think about going to your local lodges, Elks, Freemasons, Moose, Rotary, etc. and asking for help there. Someone might know of work in the area. People either don't know or forget the purpose of many of these lodges is to help the community.

You might be very comfortable with your past employment. Everyone in this world always choose the comfort zone thinking that at least I have a job and do it for life is the security of my life. Never expected that the age of information laid off how many thousands of workers especially in manufacturing industries. The only remedy to your depression is to let it go. Let the past be the history, begin your new chapter of life. Imagine that you have 100 years of living, you are only crossing half of your life. There is still more exciting chapters to go through. Let it go and get up.

Go to uni and study whatever you want! My mum finished her degree at 56 and is loving her new job! It's something she's secretly wanted to do all these years and finally went and did it. I don't think she'll ever stop working :D
