solid - particles vibrate, pretty much fixed. fixed shape, fixed mass, cannot be compressed easily.
liquid - particles slide over one another. no fixed shape, fixed mass, cannot be compressed easily.
gas - particles are widely spaced and move freely. no fixed shape, no fixed mass, can be compressed easily.

There are four states of matter (listed in order of denisty of molecules): Solid - Matter that has it's own shape Liquid - Matter that takes the shape of the container is located in Gas - Matter without shape Plasma - Ionized gas which is a gas that has at least one electron dissociated from a proportion of the atoms or molecules.

Gas, liquid and solid. It's to do with the atoms and how far apart they are ie atoms clos together - solid, atoms close but able to move around one another - liquid, atoms far apart - gas. Interesting fact H2O (water) is the only chemical where in its solid state, weighs less than its liquid state. ie ice cubes (solid water) float on liquid water. But if you were to freeze any other chemical, the solid cubes would sink to the bottom when placed onto the liquid of that chemical!

1) Solid- Molecules in the object close together, Ususlly happens when something becomes frozen...eg (Ice)

2) Liquid- Molecules in the object are further apart, but not too far away from each other. Usually able to flow..eg (Water)

3) Gas- Molecules in the obgect are very far apart, not always in the same area... eg (steam that comes off of a boiling water

To get from one to the other you either cool it or heat it...
Gas-Liquid--Cool
Gas-Solid-Cool
Liquid-Solid-cool
Liquid-Gas-Heat
Solid-Liquid- Heat
Solid to gas- Heat

Good Luck :-)
