YES you do!!! There is no option to that unless you don't care if your PC gets riddled with viruses and bots and worms and all your financial data is stolen and probably your identity as well.
I am sure you know all that which is why you are asking about antiviruses. Well, if you want a free one theres AVG or AntiVir. They are both good. They do a better job then some paid AVs. But if you don't mind doshing out some cash I would highly recommend BitDefender. There are others as well that you can look into as well. May I also recommend you get a firewall on your PC (if you already don't have one). Zone Alarm is the best one out there among all the free ones and probably better than all the paid ones as well. You can also get Anti-spyware software as well that are free like Spybot or Ad-aware.
I think you will be quite safe if you are using these but at the end of the day it is you who has to be careful when you download stuff and go to different websites.
Good Luck!!

Why oh Why do people keep recommending Norton. It is shite. Symantec are reactive not proactive!!!!!
I'm not going to try any more - just try this software and no, I'm not on bloody commission.
www.prevx.com
It's a damned sight cheaper and a replacement for all antivirus, firewall and malware/spyware software that you'll probably pay 10 times more for!

free antivirus program normally can only detect but unable to remove the infected files. else it is not strong enough and they might be a virus themselves.... if really got such a good free program... the companies like norton, trends.. can just close down.
if it is becos of cost($$) you are looking for a free software.. i recommend you to try Cyber Scrub Antivirus. it comes with a 5 years subscription fee waived, you need not renew its license yearly for 5 years with just one year cost.

O yeh - its FREE!

Use it in conjunction with Windows Defender, Spybot S&D and ZoneAlarm firewall and your computer will be secure.

Norton isn't as good as it used to be. I'd recommend Eset NOD32. It traps spyware as well as viruses, updates at least once a day and isn't too bloated that it slows your PC down.
I installed NOD on a PC running Norton and it found 40 viruses!
Speaks for itself really.

For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here

I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.
If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.
Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

If you get online.....you need AV software...there are so very many applications out there. I personally and professionally use Computer Associates ETrust.
But really, get something...you are asking for trouble. Check out www.cnet.com....
