Late at night, they're the only places open. Donuts are small and (relatively) clean, as opposed to chili dogs or something messy like that. It gives the officer something to do to get out of the car after driving around patrolling for hours, and they usually have coffee (a known stimulant) to help keep them awake.
The donut places don't mind because they have free police protections while the officers are in there. And if the police get a call, it's easy to dispose of the donuts so they can get to the crime scene.

this is an previous different halves tale. law enforcement officials artwork all night long and oftentimes the only place to get a cup of coffee is a doughnut save. simply by fact of this you spot police automobiles often times parked there. Its no longer the doughnuts that attracts the. Its the coffee.

I think maybe since cops work at weird hours, sometimes graveyard shift, they were known to go into 24 convenient stores (like 7/11 or 24 hour diners) and just grab something small to eat. Like, donuts, coffee, bagels, etc. So they just over did it in the movies to show the stereotype.

I'm sure they do for practical purposes. Doughnuts are cheap, they are cool to the touch, easy to handle and are portable. Besides that, they taste good. Why wouldn't a police officer, or any one for that reason, eat doughnuts?

they get free donuts at coffee shops, i have worked at 3 of them in the city.
the donut places like cops coming at all hours, it makes them feel safer.
