They are in their investment phase, gaining as many viewers as they can and also popularity. They surely can't return all their costs just by the advertising they have right now, but in the future, having a bigger worldwide community watching their videos on a daily basis will surely stimulate companies to invest a bigger share of their marketing budget to associate their brands to their site.
There is a big risk for this strategy though, which are the copyrights of the videos posted. I don't know if you heard, recently the Brazilian justice put the web-site down because of a video involving a Brazilian model. Specialists say this kind of legal measures will happen more often, what would surely impact on the willingness of the advertisers to spend their money in a "instable" and "polliticaly incorrect" web-site. If this really happen they will be in serious trouble.
I think you have a very interesting question right there.

People themselves do not make money off of YouTube. Although the owners do. If you go on YouTube you'll see that there are tons of ads. And occasionally if you have a really popular video that takes a while to load they'll put an ad in front of that. So the owners make money, but the regular users just create and post videos for the fun of it. A lot of the users also hope that they'll turn out like Ok-Go. And get on TV, and become famous. Although not many people get famous off of YouTube. And again, for the subscriber thing, they want as many subscribers as possible. For all the users know, the subscribers could be their future fans! -Klaire
