The answer to this is a qualified yes. Diamond has a very high specific gravity and will work its way down through soil/sand etc. far more quickly than materials with a lower S.G. by the the action of rain and soil movement. This does not happen instantly but it does mean that the longer you leave it the less chance you have of finding it on the top surface.

not always it can yes but usually no. an eg for yes would be a beach with fine dry sand. an eg for no would be say a wet well trimed lawn
