there were 3 people, a daughter, mother, and grandmother so the pizza was divided into 3 equal parts.

now if you meant four people ie two different mothers and two different daughters, then 3 long straight cuts divides the pizza into 4 equal parts.

Assumed that there were two different unrelated mothers and each had one daughter, in all 4 persons.
First they cut the pizza (presumed to be a perfect circle) into two equal parts by making a cut through the center, leaving two equal semi-circular pieces. Then they cut each piece separately along the center and perpendicular to the original diameter. This makes 3 cuts and 4 equal quarters.

The cuts were made vertically, which by doing so, it broke the pizza into four long parts; there were the two parts on both sides of the pizza, with two additional parts toward the center of the pizza therefore giving each person one long piece of pizza.
Actually if it was cut horizontally in the same manner, you would still have one piece for each person.
