Them stem and branches could represent what bad things manifest from the evil. Watering could be everyone feeding into the evil and giving it strength.

This is a metaphor taken from the bible. The actual term is "For the love of money is the root of all evil" Timothy 6:10

Money is not the root of all evil. The love of money is. With it and from it come fear, greed and many evil fruits. Watering would be anything that increases the yield, I'd say.

If money is the root of all evil
The stem is surely greed!
The branches are knarled and twisted
And on others they do feed!
The nourishmnet it needs:
ignorance and short sightedness.

I'll take a shot.
The stems and branches...
Well the stem would be vanity, as haveing money always leads to vanity, which inturn will lead to branches such as pride, and gluttony.
The watering is greed.
