Make sure the phone is Tri/Quad band. Also check to see if your network support this.

I brought an HP iPAQ back from the US. It was quad band, but I was unable to change certain features such as the message centre number. This meant I was totally unable to send texts!

What do you mean by "SIM Free" phone? Phones that don't use SIM cards are CDMA and as far as I know, there are no CDMA carriers in the UK. Just buy a phone outright. eBay, is always good for that.

Depends on the mobile phone. Mobile networks in US are mainly CDMA2000, whereas in UK they are either GSM/GPRS or WCDMA. Hence not all handsets will work here in UK. Check the spec of the mobile you intend to bring in the UK and see if it supports GSM or WCDMA. Good luck.

NO! SIM free phones are CDMA. There are no CDMA networks in the UK - only GSM and 3G
