Historically southern part of India was less disturbed and free from invasions. So they could pursue their studies undisturbed. In north India though there were famous universities like Nalanda, Takshsila and education was pursued the frequent invasions from Greeks, Moguls etc., took away their time in fighting wars. Famous poet like Kalidasa, Valmiki, Vedavyas, Tulsidas are from north. Ujjain and Banaras were seats of learning are also in north. After Britishers brought India into one continent and less invasions, south Indians took the advantage of their earlier lead.

South Indians' mindset is to give education to girls and boys equally, because 90% of the families are middle-class or below middle-class.So,after marriage both wife and husband go to jobs to enjoy a decent life and they can provide good education to their children.I am a South Indian and my father practised the principle, which I am fallowing, afterwards my children also fallow the same. It is the main thing.
