Every human being was female for the first six weeks after conception - ie. they only have the X chromosone, foetus' that become male will develop the Y chromosone also.
The human species has 23 pairs of chromosones, 22 of which appear the same, and the X and Y chromosones. If you are male, you have the standard 22 pairs, plus oneX and one Y chromosone. If you are a female, you will have the standard 22 pairs plus twoX chromosones. The Y-chromosone is only carried by the male

It's because when babies are first forming they are unisex - so all the bits have to be there. Later on during gestation the baby's sex starts to happen and some bits develop and others don't. EG, the clitoris in men develops into a penis.

The first two answers are correct, and this is true of all mammals. I would not say that they serve no function whatsoever, though. For many men, they are a sensitive erogenous zone, leading to greater sexual arousal. Don't knock 'em. You might miss them if they weren't there (and you'd look kind of funny, too. hehehe).

We have nipples because they develop before our genetic coding has decided a gender in the womb.
