I am a major pack-rat. I have much trouble throwing anything out (I am not talking about garbage, I have not trouble throwing garbage away). Anyway, my home has become seriously congested with various items, some useful and some not. I really need to clean up. Does anyone out there have any tips for me?

Really old and great concept. It's called "Like-Love".
Think of a place to take your things, or people to give them to. Personal or charity wise.
Go through your stuff and list them as "really like it" vs. "really love it. Keep what you love, give away what you like.

As a self proclaimed pack rat myself I can understand how hard it is to throw things out!!!What i find works the best is having your best friend come over and going threw everything one room at a time. They willhelp you when you are stuck on keeping something. Then you can give all the stuff thats still useful to a charity. You will feel better and your house will look better I promise.

what do you have to work with for storage?. do you have a basement?, if so, shelves and storage tubs/bins.
do you have a garage? again shelves and storage bins/tubs.
if niether of above.
do you have a crawl space? storage bins/tubs
no crawl space either. i'm sorry.
do you have an attic? put plywood across the rafters and store your bins and tubs in there.
storage bins are sturdy ,stackable, keeps out most dust and moisture. just label them as to contents.
other than that, go through and separate everything thats useful to you and find a place for it and package up the stuff that would be useful to someone and set aside for e-bay, or a yard/garage sale, make some cash on the stuff your not gonna use.
