I went to school in the 70s and 80s in Australia. I truly believe we had the best education of all time. We had open learning about everything including religon and Australian history (although it was sometimes either biased or inaccurate) and emphasis placed on learning the basics of the three R's. We were taught about other countries history as well and also given many extracurricalar activity choices. My parents generation got a limited education, mostly based on entering the workforce for men or the home for women, with very little room for extracurricular activities or the basics. My children also do not seem to need to learn the basics, such as the 3 R's, or basic maths even. They can graduate high school without being able to do simple sums or spell accurately. Whilst some of the things they are taught may be more accurate, it seems that education has been given a dumbing down at least here in Australia to the detriment of our children I believe.

I'd say better, for the most part. I've seen a lot of my parents old school work/books and there was a lot of misinformation in there. Native Americans were 'savage Indians' and black people were mostly ignored unless they were used as an extreme example of something. Learning about other cultures/countries seemed to not be that important back then and the information seemed more biased. A lot of stereotyping and generalizations. I had a lot of college level course work in high school and my parents seemed to have focused on more basic things. They were learning in high school what I learned in 7th grade. I know girls were pushed more toward the homemaker or secretarial career. My mom took classes on shorthand/stenography.

I will say that my parents and grandparents seemed to have a better basic education in math. My grandfather knew trigonometry and he didn't make it past 8th grade (Catholic school). That wasn't even offered to me in school. I assume that math skills had more value back then since it was a time before computers. There was also more of a focus on being able to spell correctly and have proper handwriting.

My education was better because my Parents had to drop out at early ages to take care of their families and then raise their children, I got to graduate and I miss High School because I had alot of friends, I graduated 110 out of 650 students, for me that was really good.

Education gets better with every generation because of new teaching techniques, new knowledge and new methods of accessing that knowledge.

I don't know. Probably. But for SURE, my kids' education is MUCH more intense than mine was. I'm up HOURS helping them. THANK GOD for the internet on some of their homework.

It's awful. And MUCH more than I had to deal with. (notice I left my husband's participation out of this conversation). *roll eyes*

better, dads generation rarely graduated and wasn't required to go beyond 8th grade, they learned only the basics and religion was stressed in ethnic catholic schools. billy is no genius but he did do better than that.
