agree withi you 100%. I also get fed up with the British being asked to apologise for slavery, whereas in fact the slave traders were the African and Asian races who plundered their own people to provide slaves for the white purchasers. OK, we used the slaves but the black races actually captured them and sold them to us. I don't see them apologising for their own actions.
I'm fed up with apologising for being white, western and Christian. If we asked a black, african muslim to apologise for being who he was then all sorts of stars and fireworks would explode but we, the indigineous race of this country ... well, we just have to roll over and play dead and let everyone walk all over us.
I'm just bl***y fed up with it all!

I am sick and tired of hearing all this negativity from the British and ethnic minorities, for two wrongs do not make it right.
I agree that Britain does embrace other ethnic minorities, more than other countries around the world, yet how tolerant are individuals?, going by some of the questions I have seen on this site, the numbers do not look too good.
I am British, yet my maternal lineage goes back to India, as Anglo Indians mixed with Jewish, whilst my Paternal lineage is Anglo Scottish and Irish.
Although I look Caucasian, when people identified me with my Indian looking second cousin (IN MY SCHOOL DAYS), I suffered taunts and racial abuse.
They did not consider that my second cousin only spoke English, nor the fact that he supported the English cricket team and was a Christian by culture and faith.
Anglo Indians are a minority in India and in Britain yet they are the children of the British Raja and Empire, for good or bad.
One thing I will say is that Indians I have met have always shown respect and friendliness towards me whilst a small percentage of British people have shown only ignorance not just towards my own family history but also towards their own history as they are intertwined.
So being a "Heinze 57" I have seen both sides of the argument.
All Big Brother has shown is that British people are inheritantly bigoted and ignorant, which I know is not the true picture.
There are many British people who are tolerant, broadminded, intelligent and knowledgeable about our own history abroad.
One point I would like to make is that the use of the word Asian to cover Indians and Pakistani's is misleading, as I have often heard British people, claim that Muslims, Siki and Hindu's are all the same, which they are most certainly not.
As you can appreciate in these troubled times, such a misconception is insulting and downright dangerious towards the Hindu and Siki communities.
What we need is good old fashioned common sense and a very old British characteristic called good manners to get us through this highly embarrassing predicament.

I have not stayed in the UK long enough but based on what I know, the picture seems to be this:
1) Britain is very liberal 'legally' and 'formally'. People get British passports and they are legally considered British. Amazing! Foreign-born people can even run for offices and there have been foreign born MPs. And you have had a Jewish PM. You have made amends for all your past colonial adventures and are falling over backwards to accomodate minorities and integrate immigrants. On the legal and formal basis it is very commendable and good.
2) However, from what I have heard and observed, socially and informally speaking, you seem to be very racist, classist, snobbis, stand-offish and nationalistic. While minorities are not bothered and legally protected, they have hard time fitting in, in terms of finding good friends, assocaiting with real Brits, getting married into the mainstream, dating, etc.
The gripe is this: people will work with you but they will not play with you.
This seems to be a problem in lots of other countries "spawned" by the British: Australia, Nz, Canada, the US. If you don't look , talk and act "Anglo Saxon", you will have hard time socially.
So it seems like you have two opposites existing side by side, as it were.
Having said all that, you are much better than many other European countries in most respects. Recent riots on France proved it. They seem to be much more exclusive both socially and legally while paying lip service to the fact that "everybody is French".
There are also many places in the world where while you may not fit in legally or formally, but where you will be accepted socially and informally. Latin America and Eastern Europe are like that. If you have money and can support yourself, you will be socially accepted, have local friends, get married into society with no problem whatsoever. If you try to run for their parliament though or find a good job, etc. you will see how prejudiced the people there can be.
Pretty ladies of all races have few problems in Britain, though. They quickly find boyfriends/husbands and fit in quite well.
Now, if you are bothered by people telling you how racist you are, ask them "Racist as compared to what other country?"

As an Irish person living with people of mixed race and culture I think the whole thing has gotten out of hand, the media frenzy over Big Brother has fuelled a nonsensical hype over 3 girls in a t.v. show being nasty to a girl they just met. I say 3 because I think they have made Jade out to be the worst, I think Joe and Danielle needed severe reprimanding too. Joe was an excellent immitator of what she percieved as Shilpas accent and Danielle has been 2 faced telling Shilpa she was afraid of Jade.
I know that from watching t.v. in the 70' and 80's I only ever heard the words nig nog or wog or Packie from British shows so Yes it obviously was seen as acceptable to make a laugh out of anyone who was'nt White/British back in those days. Now they are trying to reverse old habits. I think everyone should be respected regardless of where they come from and as an Irish person, well, we've gone all over the world for hundreds of years looking to improve our lives so the Irish cant afford to be racist, although we have it here too.
I think we internationally have become way too sensitive over whats Politically correct and whats not.
I think Big Brother and its passion for humilliating human beings has gone too far, they pick the most extreme characters they can find, put them in a box and let the nation watch them squirm like lab rats.
If the people in that house represent todays Britain, celebrity or not, they are showing themselves up as uneducated, mindless idiots.
I think the show should be cut for once and for all. Were the ones paying t.v. liceneces we should demand a decent service not muck and gutter.
As for Britian being tolerant of immigrants etc. your monarch (and all her colonies) is responsible for that, are you of the opinion that we should all be in our countries of origin and never travel or mix?
Ireland only recently has experienced a huge influx of immigrants, we too have voted in goverments that signed declarations and treaties which meant we opened the gates to allow anyone in, it was needed for the economy of the country. It's interesting that in our service industry now, there are more foreign nationals working in all the menial jobs, the Irish too "good" to work in bars, restaurants etc. but work is limited to thoses who do not have the proper credentials. I see this in England too, menial jobs seem to be carried out by immigrants. What does this say about how "accommodating " we are? I think there's a lot more to it.

This is all true. We have bent over backwards to accomodate all sorts of people in our country and are expected to bend still further. There has to be a breaking point and for me this will be reached very soon.
I don't mind anyone coming to live here so long as they have something to offer and will work and pay their taxes like I have to do. It doesn't matter to me what colour or creed they are but I do object to having those who want me to change my way of life or their want to blow me up in an act of terrorism inhabiting my country.
This type of person ought to realise that 'when in Rome, do as the Romans'. If they don't like it here, as it is, then they should leave for other lands, I personally didn't invite them and I wouldn't miss them if they moved away.
Unfortunately we are to blame for allowing this invasion to happen and whilst we allow this situation to continue it will only become worse.
These are my views and right or wrong, I am entitled to them, though this probably will change soon too.

There is a strong undercurrent of racism in Britain, and anybody claiming otherwise is either blind or deliberately disingenuous. You only have to look at the Immigration section of UK Answers to see it. Either the questions are outright racist, demanding that all of 'them' be deported/castrated/gassed/whatever, or they are more subtly racist, much like your question:
"We British have altered our entire culture and way of life to suit minorities and all we face in return is ingratitude and abuse"
We have not altered our entire culture at all. Nothing like it. That's just another handy cut-out-and-keep anti-foreigner tabloid phrase.

Well, a lot of us are still aggravated about "Great" Britain raping the cultures and lands of over 25 present day nations. You can't just expect people to forgive something like that, although I must admit the lengths the British Government is going to to change their image are quite amazing, although this does not apply to every citizen of the nation.

Britain is getting a difficult lesson in race relations these days. Brits made light of we here in the US for many years over our "Mistakes" with ours. The chickens are coming home to roost me dears...not so easy is it? Bending over backwards will only get you a sore back and expose the soft underbelly.
