She is going to try to sell you some stuff, they have some good stuff, but Avon is better and cheaper. If you are a good sales person and have good marketing skills then you'd probably do pretty well. It isn't easy and the stuff doesn't sell itself, you have to really push it. If you can't devote that kind of time then I say move on to something else.

PS I've had that facial and it was amazing!

I was a Mary Kay lady for a few months many, many years ago. I still look back on that time as a great learning experience. I was a student and didn't have much money, but I bought the kit anyway. (-: I think I sold about one lipstick, and a few things to my mom. In no way did I make back my profit!

But:

1) I learned about this kind of direct selling first hand, and now I can say "no" to any new offers to sell Amway or whatever.

2) I got a discount on my make-up for several years.

3) I learned a lot about make-up -- how to apply it, how to keep my skin fresh and clean, etc.

4) I learned a lot about how to present myself when selling things. It was advice I didn't have the guts to follow back when I was a 20-something, but it has served me well as I got older. Things like cold-calls, talking to strangers, believing that what I do makes a difference.

So, knowing what I do now, I'd do it over again. But, if you are looking for quick money, a good thing to learn now is: 1) there's no such thing as a free lunch and 2) how to say no graciously.

After the complimentary facial, she may pressure you to buy products or become a rep yourself. Thank her nicely and say no. You've done her a favor by being a customer -- someone she could practice her pitches on. You don't need to do anymore if you really don't want to.

Well, she is going to try to get you to come to a meeting to find out if Mary Kay is "for you". I have never personally known anyone who did great in MK except for the directors, etc. at the meetings.

I did MK for a couple of years about 7 years ago. It is not easy. The makeup and skin care is somewhat expensive, depending on what your customer is or isn't using. To someone buying dept. store stuff, it's cheaper or comparable in price. For someone who buys Wet n Wild, Jane, etc., it's pricy. It's good quality and some people like the personal service of a sales rep. Others hate it.

I my experience, a lot of people will let you come in, do the presentation, take free gifts, etc. and NOT buy a dang thing. Not that they are obligated, of course, but when you spend 2-3 hours at someone's house and sell NOTHING(or a lipgloss, eyeshadow, etc.), the hours add up fast.

Take a look at the opportunity. It's not for everybody, but certainly people do make money selling MK. It's a time commitment, though. Meetings, conventions, sales presentations all add up. I was gone most evenings and worked full time. I did not turn a profit(not even close). I got a great sales education, though, and met some great people. I also lost about 20 lbs. running all over the city for appointments.

Be prepared to be asked to purchase a lot of inventory if you decide to sell MK. Do not do it unless you are willing to lose that money. I still have a ton of makeup I'll probably never sell and will take me years to use. At least I got it 50% off!

I sell Avon & Mary Kay. I do pretty good on both. It's a tax deduction at the end of the year because you can write everything off. Avon is only $10.00 to get started Mary Kay is $100.00 plus tax.
