I think we get attracted to others because we see qualities in them that are either similar to our own or we see qualities we wish we had in ourselves...

They say , love is chemistry. Phenylalanine is said to be the chemical substance that is produced in one person's blood that causes Love or attraction. This love or attraction is triggered by our senses finding an acceptable partner. It need not be essentially of same sex, same species. But one thing is sure , it has something to do with blood. Some changes that are caused in blood and lasts for years is said to be the reason for some body's liking for somebody else. As the proximity is diminished, this attraction also diminishes. When we are very sad, it is the heart that is nearer to another heart that consols not the brain. Just imagine the solace that you get on hugging somebody? Better keep on attracting by doing good things which everybody likes....

Out of the many possibilities, we are attracted to someone because of love. A sense of 'oneness' overpowers the senses and its very nature continues to grow. Being attracted is obviously a natural phenomenon and most often it is from the mind and heart. We feel that we may have a completely new life with the person to whom we are attracted.

Sex attraction is the beginning of the illusion summarized in the phrase aham mameti: "I am my body, and everything in relationship with my body is mine." A man searches after a woman, and a woman searches after a man, and when they unite for sex the material illusion becomes very strong. This is nature's arrangement for keeping the conditioned soul under her stringent laws.
The whole material world is based on the attraction between male and female. This principle is working not only in human society, but among the birds, beasts, aquatics, insects- everywhere. You will find that as soon as a male dog sees a female dog, the male immediately begins canvassing: "Please come, let us unite."
Therefore, in human society one has to understand by Vedic knowledge, by education, that we are bound up within this material world due to sex attraction. Unless one inquires into the Absolute Truth, a human being is no better than an animal.

The whole answer is very complex, but a simple and short answer can be given to that|
It is because what we perceive in the other person is what is missing in ourselves - what is needed to complete us|
It is subconsciously registered, but that is the case|
That is why God has ordained *most* people to marriage|
However, God calls a *small number* to the celibate life. These are not frustrated people, for if God has truly called them to that, that is where they are happy and fulfilled|
We cannot make the mistake of judging what is good for another by what we want ourselves|
That is a common mistake that is made today|

When we see what we like, we are attracted....
This getting attracted does not wait for us to first discover what we really like !!
May be if we mis-understand our likes , we may struggle with some 'trouble' we bought... but surely the attraction would happen when the real " like " comes in front of us.

socrates said that love is what is lacking. There is also a theory that people are attracted to others that look like them - maybe this is vanity.

I'm talking about attraction as in love. It just happens and you'll just know it when it happens but you'll never know why it does. If you know why it happens, then that's a fake attraction.
