Strains are injuries that affect muscles or tendons, thick bands that attach muscles to bones. They occur in response to a quick tear, twist, or pull of the muscle. Strains are an acute type of injury that results from overstretching or over contraction. Pain, weakness, and muscle spasms are common symptoms experienced after a strain occurs.

Sprains are injuries that affect ligaments, thick bands of cartilage that attach bone to bone. They occur in response to a stretch or tear of a ligament. Sprains are an acute type of injury that results from trauma such as a fall or outside force that displaces the surrounding joint from its normal alignment. Sprains can range from a mild ligamentous stretch to a complete tear. Bruising, swelling, instability, and painful movement are common symptoms experienced after a sprain occurs.

RICE is the acronym used for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. It is used as the best initial treatment of soft tissue injuries such as sprains, strains, and contusions. The combination of RICE helps reduce inflammation that occurs after acute injury. It is important to remember that the earlier this treatment is put into place, the more effective it is.

Rest: Rest and protect the injured area.

Ice: Apply ice to the injury. The cold will reduce swelling and pain at the injured site. This step should be done as soon as possible. Apply the frozen object to the area for 20 minutes three times a day for the first 48 hours.

Compression: Compress the injured site. This will decreases swelling of the injured region. Although the wrap should be snug, make sure it is not too tight as this can cause numbness, tingling, or increased pain.

Elevation: Elevate the injured area above the level of the heart as much as possible. This technique will also assist in reducing the amount of swelling to the injured site.

Once the pain and swelling are eliminated, you should start gradual range of motion exercises but not to the point of pain. Each day your range of motion will increase slightly. Continue until you have complete range of motion. Than start gentle strengthening exercises to re-build the strength in the injured area.

If after several days there is not noticeable improvement consider getting an x-ray.

You should have it X-rayed, as you may have broken some of the tiny bones in your hand. Or it may be a sprain. Sometimes without an X-ray it's impossible to tell which. Either way, it should be checked. You may need a cast to prevent any further damage being done if it is broken.

I am NOT a doctor, but I took a similar fall awhile back. Depending on your age, you may have broken a bone (or bones)and not know it. I fell of a chair a couple of years ago, put my arm out to break the fall, and broke 4 bones in it, including one in my wrist and one in my hand. You need to have it x-rayed as soon as possible, because if you let it go, you may not be able to have it "mended" by a doctor so that it heals properly! For now, use ice and heat alternately until you can get to a professional.

May be sprained, strained or broken.

PRICE therapy and go to Dr for an xray.

Protect- the area of injury (don't move it)
Rest- the hand (stop using it)
Ice- to keep swelling to a minimum, careful of frostbite
Compression- (with ice unless it's painful or numb)
Elevation- keeping it above your heart to keep the blood pressure low in the hand.

the only way to really tell if you have done damage to your hand is to have xrays done. I wouldnt go with any other advise because if you do and dont have it looked at you may be in for more problems in the future instead of fixing a small problem now. Mostlikly its nothing but you never know. I would go have it checked out

You should get it checked out. Try icing it, but it sounds like you might have a fracture or a very bad sprain. A doctor is the best thing so you can get pain killers and the proper treatment. hope you feel better!

my best bet is that you have sprained it i dont think it is broken.

i would say for some treatment that if there is swelling to use ice on it and try not to move it much try bandaging it and see how it is in a couple of days if it is still really painful i would suggest going to the doctor for a check up

good luck hope it gets better soon

RICE
R= rest
I = ice, ice it 20min at a time
C= compression, use of bandage
E= elevate the limb affected, use a sling or a pillow or two when lying or sitting down.

Otherwise, get an xray quick smart, you may indeed have a fracture and require resetting of the bone and plaster..called a GAMP.

You might have sprained your wrist. I would apply heat to it for flexibility, and ice to reduce swelling or soreness. It usually takes 5 to 7 days for it to heal.
