If you like intellectual thrillers, look into Angels and Demons, as well as the Da Vinci Code. I know there's a bunch of controversy over this, but they really are good reads. Also, the Life of Pi. It's a fantastic book. It's a bit different then most people read, but I loved it. And it has a great twist at the end. I'm a big fantasy reader, and I know you don't really like that sort of thing, but look into the book Twilight. It's a vampire story, but it's a great romance. Night by Elie Wiesel is a hard core historical nonfiction, and if you haven't read it I highly recommend it. Not for the faint of heart, but I loved it when I read it. If you want a bit of humor, look into Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging. Laugh out loud at times. A must read. For some action (although not too old) Stormbreaker is my favorite. Anthony Horowitz is a great writer, especially when it comes to putting you right into the moment. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope these help!

I think that the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series would be good. Also Libba Bray's series that has A Great & Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels in it (her third comes out later this year). For any girl I would say Jane Austen, but the older English language is a little harder to understand, so that'd only be if you're up for it. The diary of Anne Frank is a must for everyone I think, and you'd be able to understand it because she was your age when she wrote it. I personally like the Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L'Engle. Hope these are good suggestions...

The Giver by Lowry
A Room of My Own by Ann Tatlock (historical fiction)
Marley and Me ( a funny and true story about the world's worst behaved dog)
A Gown of Spanish Lace by Oke ( a young woman is kidnapped and must escape. Very exciting book.)
Christy by Marshall (historical fiction)
The Diary of Anne Frank
The Acorn People ( a modern true story)
Hail, Hail Camp Timberwood by Conford (my favorite at age 13. A girl goes away to camp for the first time)
Little Women by Alcott (check out the movie too. My best friend loved it in middle school, but I thought I was too cool to read it. I wish I had, instead of waiting until adulthood!)
Because of Wynn Dixie
Izzy, Willy, Nilly by Voight ( a girl is in a car accident and winds up losing the use of her legs)
Departures by Robin Jones Gunn (3 stories in one about traveling teen girls)
No Promises in the Wind by Hunt (one of my faves in the 7th grade)
Pollyanna by Porter (I still reread it every few years. Check out the movie staring Haley Mills)
Girl of the Limberlost by Porter
Anne of Green Gables (the movie's even better)

Have you tried the Giver, and it's companion Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry? They're both great books.

Also, if you like Vampires or anything like that, try Anne Rice's books. the first is The Vampire Lestat. I started reading those when I was around your age.

If you like historical fiction try Markus Zusak's THE BOOK THIEF
.
www.amazon.com/Book-Thief-Markus-Zusak/dp/0375831002

It is set in Nazi Germany but is completely different to any other young adult book I have read that is set in this period. Also, it is not so much young adult fiction, as fiction which has a young adult as the main protagonist.

I just finished reading HOW I LIVE NOW by Meg Rosoff and would really recommend it

try any books by john marsden, in particular, the tommorrow series (its about what would happen if australia got invaded. a group of teenage mates were camping for a week in an isolated place and when they return to their country town they find it to be invaded. they then take action and decide to help combat the invaders.) they are really good set of books (7 in all) and it is written for your age group.
cheers!
