"Old" is relative I'm learning.
My grandmother was born in the late 1800's. Her afghans, hooked rugs and crocheted pillows were done in wool.
If they are dirty... I like the idea of the baby detergent and the mesh bag and the bathtub. Be careful rolling in a towel. After being cleaned, think about dry cleaning in future. If they are just dusty-- tumble in dryer on air and check the lint trap to see what you caught.
Now I am a grandmother and the afghans, pillows and rugs I've made are acrylic and synthetic yarns-- if the knots hold, they're good forever. I wash my afghans in the washer on gentle and dry using softner. If the sun is out, I prefer to dry on the line.
good luck

Do not use woolite!! Woolite shrinks wools and ruins many different fabrics. Use a gentle detergent like arm & hammer or detergents special for newborns clean really well. Put the stuff in a mesh bag and wash on gentle. Do not use hot water warm or cold is fine. Lay flat to dry so they dont stretch.

Using Woolite is a good idea. It smells good and they will feel softer.
To be honest, I've always washed mine in the washing machine on a regular cycle, but if they seem fragile or you're worried use the delicate cycle.
Good luck!

Pour a very mild washing up liquid and some bicarbonate of soda into the bathtub. Run lukewarm water into the tub. Put the afghan in the tub and gently squeeze the water through the afghan. Drain the tub and run water in it to rinse by squeezing the afghan again. Lay a huge towel out on the floor and place the afghan on it and roll the towel up. Lay out another towel and lay the afghan on it to dry.

You need to put them into a laundry bag, tie it shut and then use your delicate cycle on you machine. That is how I wash mine that I have had since I was a child. It is still in good shape.

If you can, hand wash in Woolite or you can use the gentle cycle in your washing machine but use Woolite or something similar. i would try to hang them to dry or just partially dry them in the dryer on low.
