update... I am about 31 weeks and it seems that the more pregnate I am, the more comfortable I am on my back. I try to sleep on my sides but when I wake up at night I am on my back again. Im not due to see my doc for another 4 weeks and Ijust dont want to endanger our unborn son. Any ideas on how to stay on my sides?

It cuts off both oxygen and blood flow to the baby, and from my experience, feels as if I was being smashed! That can't be healthy!

The conventional wisdom on this is that the weight of the heavy uterus will cut off blood flow to the baby....this is NOT good. At a certain point (I would say in the 7th month or so) it should not feel good to you either. Sleeping on your side is a good habit to get into around your last trimester. All you can do is try, if you roll back over on to your back while you are sleeping there is not much you can do.
Ask you doctor at your next appointment and see what she says.
Good luck!

you just dont want to sleep like that all the time..for the first 3 to 4 months i slept on my back..but im now 6 months and if i start to lay on my back for long periods at a time i will start to go numb in certain areas b.c of the baby pushing on the nerves ...they dont recommend doing it b.c when it cuts of the blood supply to the baby it could kill both of you...try propping on your side and placing a pillow behind your back..good luck and congrats..

no it's not harmful. i've read in multiple sources that there really is no harmful way to sleep. you may sleep however you are comfortable. as your stomach grows, you will be less and less comfrtable on your back anyways and will probably naturally switch to sleeping on your side.
