I would like to buy a 1st gen. 4G Ipod nano, but what is the difference between 1st & 2nd gen.? Also, does the Ipod nano have build-in FM radio? Many thanks

Much improved over the 1st generation nano
Strengths: Aluminum Case (meaning less-prone to scratching), Very small to fit in a pocket, improved iPod interface w/ search function, battery life does seem long.
Weaknesses: Didn't notice the screen to be any brighter as Apple says, doesn't play any of the new iTunes games, still has no FM radio (requires the extra remote), headphone jack on bottom, 8gb only in black.
Summary: Apple has done a spendid job in taking the old iPod mini's aluminum case and putting it on the nano instead. I would really say that this new nano is more like a shrunken ipod mini, except with a bottom headphone jack (which I personally don't like). With the aluminum case, this nano is less-prone to scratches compared to the 1st-gen nano and the video ipod. I got my nano today and I've already played about 4 hours of music with the battery gauge now at I'd say 80%. So the battery should be impressive, probably not the 24 hrs that Apple says but still decent. The interface now allows you the search for your music instantaneously, just like you can in iTunes. However, I wish Apple had put a built-in FM tuner instead of making us buy the little remote. I also was disappointed to see the 8gb come only in black; I really wanted a blue nano, but I also don't want 4gb. The black does still look pretty cool, I will admit that. Overall, I think this is the best non-video iPod to date. Apple definitely should be able to sell thousands of this model (I would say even more if there was a better color selection). As of today (only 2 days after the release), many of the 1st-gen ipod nano accessories are compatible with the 2nd-gen nano, but because Apple slightly shifted the positions of the headphone jack and dock connector port, there are a few accessories (notably cases and armbands) which are not quite compatible. But I'm sure the major ipod accessory makers are going to update their products very soon.

The second generation iPod nano's have more storage, better software (I believe) and are a fraction smaller. Both can show pictures as well as music but neither can play movies or games - that's a full size iPod functin only.

iPods don't have an FM tuner but you can but an optional extra from the Apple store which includes a remote/tuner as part of the headphones.

the first era are the unique ones with the silver metallic on the again. The second era are the more moderen ones that are aluminum and are available in quite some colorings. I have the second one era and for my area, i think that it really is more effective powerful that the first one. more effective colorings to go back to a call from, and the again doesn't get scratched up like on the first era. they're no longer truly a unique length yet i imagine the second one era is quite smaller than the first.
