The Canadians, our friends to the north, are nice people. We just like to kid them a lot. Although we speak the same language, they have some idioms that clearly indicate that the are Canadian. Like saying eh? a lot after making a statement ... like they're trying to reach agreement or looking for a response, eh?
They are excessively polite and mindful to not offend. It appears to be an overly politically correct culture to Americans. That's not necessarily a bad thing either.
They have a history of liberal governments, many Americans would say that they border on socialism. That has changed recently with the election of their present government. It is much more conservative and a closer ally to Washington than it has been for decades.. Mainly, that's because of the common need to be vigilant against terrorism. Their history of liberalism is not a bad thing either ... they do have national health care which the USA hasn't.
They have a bit of an inferiority complex. Their national identity tends to get blended in to that of Americas because American television bombards their airwaves and the Canadian dollar is worth less than the American dollar.
Canadians are beer and ice-hockey crazy. There's a joke that goes like this: Q: What's the ideal Canadian girl look like? A: She's aboot three feet tall with a flat top head ... perfect for setting your beer on while watching ice-hockey on TV.
Most Americans actually like Canadians and vice versa, it's just a joking around thing . I'm sure that Canadians have thousands of jokes about Americans. It's no big deal.

There are a few subtle differences. East coasters have a thick accent that's where you may here the aboot. Here are a few differences.
Soda=Pop
Napkin=Serviette
Sweet Tea=Iced Tea
I know when we travel, and I have asked for vinegar for my fries it will come in a bowl????or I will get the hairy eyeballs if I ask for a serviette. You have to keep in mind we are much more European in culture and nature.
I am just thank full we do not say y'all
If you ever have access to Canadian Television you must check out the Royal Canadian Air farce, This hour has 22 minutes it is Canadians making fun of themselves, even our major political leaders will do guest shots. The best part of our sense of humour is we can laugh at ourselves, that's why we don't get all pissy.

I don't understand it either. Apparently we Americans think the Canadians are dumb for some reason but I don't know why. They do pronounce a few things differently such as 'about' (aboot) and 'sorry' (sorey) but I don't think that's really enough of a reason to laugh at them ALL the time. We do seem to make fun of them a lot and say all the Canadian women are sluts, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are a joke, the people are happy and friendly because they are weird and stupid, etc..
I think the main reason must be that some people think of Canada as a boring place where the people must be jealous of us because we have it so much 'better' than them so we make fun of them for it. I personally think it's strange that Canada is some sort of joke to us. (Then again, everyone always says they are going to run to Canada for 'political asylum' or to dodge the draft)

In my experience, it's the other way around.
Always with the "stupid american" jokes.
As far as the countries being similar .... they are similar in the same way that an apple and an orange are both fruit, or a daisy and a rose are both flowers, or a dog and a horse are both mammals.
Yes, similar in many ways on the surface, but spend a month in whichever you don't live in, and you will very quickly see how very different the two countries are!!
I am a U.S. Citizen living in Canada, and I love it, and most everything about Canada, but it is very different from the U.S.

I don't notice us doing it as much anymore, but we used to a lot. Everyone makes fun of everyone really, there's rarely any ill intent behind it. I don't know anyone who truly hates Canadians just because they're Canadian.

Well canadians are look at as p*ssies because they're nuetrals and americans are fighters. As far as the accent goes, you really need to pay attention. Not all canadians are hilarious to listen to but the ones that are will crack you up. Some midwestern americans sound closely.

American jokes? The impact of a joke upon any given language is simply the mind laughing out loud. It is a language game of the intellect to know it's conscious. it is a teaching tool. and a medicine for the mind to help overcome pain in a different transition of growth.and to all languages, no joke! HAVE A NICE DAY.
