I just laugh hysterically at my own joke... they will either laugh at me, or walk away feeling slightly disturbed... either way its funny

Say "Don't everybody laugh at once." Then refrain from telling jokes for a while.
If nobody got it or thought it was funny it was the wrong joke for that group. Next time, pick the right jokes for the audience.
If you have a friend in the crowd, you could ask them later why they didn't find it funny, but don't be tempted to explain it to them if they didn't get it. There are no do-overs for comedy.
Hint: Alzheimer's jokes don't work well in senior centers; divorce jokes won't fly on a honeymoon cruise; and Bush jokes are a no-no at cabinet meetings.

obviously you will be embarrassed,however, don't let them see that. Just laugh it off and admit that it was a bad joke and as an added bonus (and if your willing to risk it) make a joke about that. (Making sure it will get laughs of course..)

Lolitta has it - "Play it off and tell another joke" Say something like: "Hmm, tough audience" or "I haven't heard this much silence since ________ (make up joke) or "Okay, moving right along." You have to be careful with humor; it must be appropriate depending on the type of your "audience."

I just keep talking. Eventually somebody laughs, or I get punched in the face. It's all good.

My roomie is the king of "tumble weed" jokes and nobody ever laughs. That doesn't seem to stop him from tell them though!
