since erosion is a bad result of overuse of soil,
demoralization is a bad phase of character. it happens to character
(b) cannot be the answer since exhaustion is a sure result of work happening to the worker and not to work ,while erosion is not a must for soil but occurs to soil!

I agree with the reasoning of the other answers, However, The answer is A. farmland:desert
Everything must find a sustanunce in order to propagate. Thus 'Food or Famine.'
This is a fundamental truth that applies in daily life.

hmm... erosion happens to soil.
farmland obviously doesn't happen to a desert.
exhaustion doesn't happen to work but to the man working.
trees die if the AIR and WATER systems are polluted.
and demoralization absolutely happens to a character of a person, so D is the right answer.
