He wants somewhere near NYC to raise the kids near his family. Where is it reasonably priced to live and buy real estate, nice and safe, but not a tiny little bong town?

Yea I REALLY want to stay away from a boring place. I'm from Miami so I'm not too worried about safety. NYC is just too expensive

Umm...There is Ringwood/Wanaque Area it is nice, there are alot of woods around and state parks, you are 2 miles from the NY State border (orange county) 30 minutes from NYC, it is really safe around here, and it is beautiful. The highschool in the area is rated one of the top high schools in the nation also

Nowhere, essentially. It's a matter of supply and demand: the 'safe' enclaves, boing or otherwise, are filled with multi-million-dollar houses at this point.

This should not deter you from investigating further. New York City is well worth living in or near under just about any circumstances.
