Well, almost all of your genes are actually encoding proteins (some just encode RNA).

Therefore many changes in the genetic sequence will cause changes in protein composition.

A triplet of three letters (bases) in the DNA codes for each individual amino acid in the protein. These three letter groups are called codons. Some amino acids are coded for by several codons, so not all changes in DNA sequence will necessarily change protein sequence, but many do.

Your best bet really is to read a basic molecular biology or molecular genetics text book and look up the "genetic code" and "codon redundancy", "protein synthesis" and other things. Unfortunately this is not the kind of question that can be answered in a very short way.
