Man, half those answers were so dumb I had to answer..
Australian cuisine is a fusion of all international cuisines... apart from having restaurants of every type in every city (indian, chinese, mexican, japanese, thai, german, french etc) there are lots of modern australian restaurants, which are fusion cuisines.
So an aussie appetiser could be absolutely anything! If you had to pinpoint it though it would probably contain seafood; australia has an abundance of cheap, fresh, delicious seafood and we like to use it. So something like chilli lime prawns or oysters done different ways could be said as typical.

There isn't really any typical Australian appetizer, however try finding recipes with something like lamb or Australian game meats like emu, kangaroo or something like that
Try the links at the bottom of this site
http://www.marga.org/food/int/australia/
however many of these foods I am sure aren't consumed very regularly here and are just made up of people from over seas who thinks its australian and common to eat

hmmm there's not much that is uniquely Australian. Just try to make something with Vegemite; here's a recipe that i found: Cheese and Vegemite Mini-Quiches 12 - slices bread, crusts removed 1 pad - butter for spreading 1 jar - Vegemite, for spreading 60 lb - bacon, finely chopped 80 g - sliced mushrooms 60 g - grated tasty cheese 2 - eggs, lightly beaten 80ml - cream 2 - tablespoons chopped chives SPREAD each slice of bread with butter then Vegemite. Press bread into non-stick muffin pans (2 pans for 6 large muffins each). Vegemite sides facing up. COOK bacon and mushrooms in a frying pan for 2 minutes. Combine bacon, mushrooms, cheese, eggs, cream and chives. SPOON savoury egg mixture into bread cases and bake at 210ºC for 15 minutes or until set. Serve hot or cold. If you can't find Vegemite in the US( a shame!), then you could make damper, something with kangaroo meat(not that we eat it all that much), or something with pawns I guess. A plate of party pies with tomato sauce would also work (they are mini meat pies.) Thats all I can think of! :-)
