China are already powerfull enough. They also have a military defence pact with Russia. Both Russia and China are nuclear powers with advanced weapons technology and huge armed forces.

In military terms, the China/Russia alliance is as powerfull as America.

In economic terms, China now has a greater Dollar capital reserve than America! America has mortgaged itself to a Communist nation!

Let's hope China and America never come to blows, otherwise we're all dead.

well, it only took the USA a little less than 300 years to be "has you say" most powerful and China has been working on it for most of 4000 years...........and up to 48 years ago was going no where!!

There be 1.3 billion people in that Country and a Army of 400 million ........which means there be 900 million that are not "free"! Being the most powerful in the World don't mean sh!! if the people are not free and in 2008 when the USA puts the name "Washington" back in D. C. you will see China drop a notch cause the American people have always been free.

Washington had been reelected unanimously in 1792. His decision not to seek a third term established a tradition that is now embedded in the 22d Amendment of the Constitution. In his Farewell Address of Sept. 17, 1796, he drew on the results of his varied experience, offering a guide for both present and future. He urged his compatriots to cherish the Union, support the public credit, be alert to the "insidious wiles of foreign influence," respect the Constitution and the nation's laws, abide by the results of elections, and eschew political parties of a sectional cast. Asserting that the United States and Europe had different interests, he declared that it "is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world," trusting to temporary alliances for emergencies. He also warned against indulging in either habitual favoritism or habitual hostility toward particular nations, lest such attitudes should provoke or involve the country in needless wars.

oh! if you think for one minute China minds its own business in the World..................you live in a Cave!

I am not. The Chinese are too nationalistic for my taste. And they are meddling in other countries' affairs by annexing them to China- look at what they had done to Tibet. I am also not looking forward to having a Communist government reigning over the world with a red flag. They have so many restrictions imposed in the local population; it is not funny. Do you enjoy having the government cesor your Internet and giving you permission to move from one city to another?

Another thing- one can become an American and then participate in "rulng the world" like say, Madelein Albright did. But can one become Chinese?

China will create an ethnic Han hegemony propped up by a red government. Try living under that.

Britain ruling the world wouldn't be bad, though. As long as you realize that the Commonwealth does not equal the world and yes, there are countries where English is not spoken and you should not force them to. If Brits became multilingual and also, overcame thier colonial guilt; they would make good rulers.

I don't see China making any fewer mistakes or being more diplomatic than the US in its dealings with the rest of the world once its industrialized potential is fullfilled. Though not totally an unknown quantity, China certainly has raw nerves - such as the events in Tiennaman Square - which others will have to approach with due caution or risk a steely response.
It will take a long time for those in power in China to become comfortable with reasonable discussion being different from treason.
I think we will all be learning as we go, honestly, and maybe that's not much to look forward to.

In May 1989 I was in Beijing on business and visited Tiananmen Square where students and others were demonstrating peacefully in favour of democracy and human rights. Many of the young people in the large state owned company that I was talking to were in the Square or had relatives and friends who were there. It was a flowering of democracy similar to Hungary in 1956 and it, as we know, received a similar brutal crackdown. Some of the young men and women I had talked to were killed or injured and since that time there has been no similar event.

China is a brutal and repressive dictatorship. Many of those who killed innocent protesters in 1989 are still in or around power. Any right minded person would view with absolute horror the idea of this junta of gangsters overtaking the US as the world's most powerful country.

Hello,

(ANS) Your wrong China has a terrible human rights record!!

What about Teanaimen square massacar's then? What about the kidnapping of the Panchen Lamma? What about Chinas expansionist policy in Tibet & the utter destruction of monks, monasteries & the incrdible history of tibetan buddhism. This is why the Dalia Lamma left Tibet to escape the Chinese & why he lives now in Northern India. The destruction of a whole culture by china just because it make spurious claims that Tibet is part of greater China (which its never been for thouands of years).

**What about Chinas miltary testing of rockets & weapons over Tywan & Japan in recent times, all this is very worry indeed.

**China is in a process of transition from the old party communist state (run by committee of old men, communist party elite) to modern capitolist state. Its almost more capitolist already than communist but it has quiet along way to go though.

**Chinas economic boom is paid for at a dreadful price to both human beings and to the enviroment. China's CO2 emmissions are massive and a real concern. There are parts of China that have some of the worst air pollution on the planet.

**Your wrong if you think China doesnt have plans for expansion & colonialism. And if you think China wont influence policies else where in the world, wait and see its only a matter of time IMO.

It's great to see the United States sit up and notice when China tests a satellite missile successfully. However history shows us that whoever is in charge becomes arrogant and ALWAYS thinks that they are a force for good. This includes the Nazi and the British empire. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I would try avoid being binary about life when the reality is that no country is good or bad. Just that power makes countries bad. See what happens to China in the future as they have a history of slaughtering each other. Good luck.

Only a mindless moron jumping on the leftist bandwagon, who couldnt poin to china on a map would say such a thing.

If china was ever in such a position ,then you and your country would be destroyed or you would be a slave to the worst oppressive ,brutal communism on the planet.

A terrible human rights record, blatant sabre rattling around taiwan,anti-satellite missile testing and arms spending at the expense of its peasant population.

The USA has protected europe and indeed southern asia from the tentacles of caggressive communism for the entirety of the cold war and beyond.
Now we have a new threat of islamic fundamentalism in the middle east and the terrorism associated.A threat that USA is taking care of because the cowardly traitors of europe wont recognise the threat until it is within their cities.
Much in the same way as france recognised the german threat in WW2 when german officers were sipping Coffee in paris!
How dare you complain of the country and the soldiers who are walking the walls to keep you safe against ppl who hate your very existance?

You need to learn more about the world and its history before you make mindless comments that you think will gain you popularity from the plebs.People like you are playing into the hands of the enemy propagandists.Lending them confort and support.Your efforts are causing iraqi civilian and allied casualties.

Problem is, how do you define 'the most powerful country'?? Surely by minding it's own business (Like invading and occupying Tibet, f'rinstance! Funding, training and protecting the Viet Cong?) it precludes attaining that status, if power is measured by influencing others.
America has an awful record of treaty breaking and blatant interference in other nations, and is very blase about human rights. But China promises to be much worse, so no, on the whole, better the devil we know!
