Was thinking of writing a book, but not sure what sort of story I should tell. Any thoughts?

You should tell a story about something that you are passionate about. Write about things you know and love. If you don't have an interest in your story, I can almost guarantee you won't finish writing it. And if you managed to get it done, it won't be nearly as compelling as if you write about something you are interested in.

Don't worry about making it a best seller just yet-- that's one of the biggest downfalls for a writer. The editing process is where you make your story shine, just worry about getting it down on paper yet. Most published authors will tell you that their first drafts are not great prose! Anne Lamott writes about it very eloquently in her book "Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life", which I would highly recommend to any new writers.

Have fun with your story!

If you have to ask, you'll never know. People in the industry told J K Rowling that she'd never make any money with her book, shows what they know. Write what you fancy, worked for Stephen King. Oh and I recommend his book, On Writing, it's got lots of good tips.

That answer about JK Rowling, she in fact struggled to become published because there isn't much money in childrens books and thats correct. Just because she's 1 in 2 million who was successful doesn't mean that view should change!
