What you're asking is not up to the "young sters" alone. Parents share the burden: This is what I'm doing with my 5-year-old:
Ages 2-12 (career training has already begun!):
1) Make an inventory of all parental expertise and pass skills on to children. In my family, we're teaching all life skills (how to take care of the house), we're homeschooling with material 1 year in advance of age, and our combined expertise includes accounting and business, construction, electronics, cooking, religion, music and international travel. By 13th birthday, our son should have a generous exposure in all of these areas.
2) Discipline includes time management, basic moral values, consistency and self-confidence. All of these are easy; there's no reason to leave them out. This kind of discipline nearly eliminates the need for spanking, time-outs and grounding. If you're a parent and you don't do this before the teen years, prepare to reap the whirlwind!
Ages 13-18 (this is the adult training period):
1) Make a list of all the things your children need to know to move out and take care of their own household and familiy. All aspects should begin at age 13 so that by age 18 they're ready to go. If you're not doing this, how do you expect them to get kicked out of the nest gracefully? It's your failure, not theirs.
2) Job and skill training needs to begin here. They need to be earning money by doing regular work for an employer, and the parents need to be actively involved in getting work, keeping it, employee evaluations and help in budgeting the money. (My 5-year-old has already begun this with household chores and an allowance. Sure, he's only making his bed and putting away dishes, but he has his own cash flow and a foothold on ownership in the household. As he gets older, he'll take on greater responsibilities, and by age 13, he'll be ready to work for someone else.)
Want your kids to work? It's up to you to make it happen, and you have 18 years to do it. I'm thankful for liberals who teach their children to be sensitive, lazy and drug addicted, relying on handouts to get through life. My son is going to kick their hind ends all over the job market!
Please, liberals: for my son's sake, continue being irresponsible morons!
