There are all sorts of things you can do to learn how to do this. Some are more psychological and others more practical.
First thing, practice singing... learn vocal warm ups, learn correct posture, learn how to read music (if you don't already)... exercising your voice and learning proper breathing etc will also give you more confidence.
When I had to sing in front of people, and it is embarassing, I would look out over the crowd, so it would look like I was looking at them, but actually I was blocking them out, mentally focusing on the music.
Another suggestion would be to start in a choir. This way you get used to singing in front of people with others so that you can work your way to singing solo. This is a more practical method which allows you to build confidence.
Another method that is practical and psychological at the same time is to learn a song backwards... I don't mean to sing the words backwards, but start by learning the last note, then learn and sing the second to last followed by the last note, etc until you've learned the whole thing (for example if you have to sing the sentence "Mary had a little lamb" you start with "lamb" then "little lamb" then "a little lamb", then "had a little lamb" until "Mary had a little lamb") What happens is that when we try to learn a song from start to finish, we stop when we make a mistake and start again from the beginning, so we know the beginning a lot better than the end.
So in singing the song, the further we get into the song the less we've practiced that part of the song. This makes one less confident as one sings. But if one learns the song from finish to start, then as one sings one knows the song more and more and has much more confidence.
Imagine everyone with their clothes off (classic public speaking/ performance method).
Practice in front of a good friend or voice coach (perferably one who will crucify you if you make a mistake). This is actually harder than the public performance, so that when you have it down in front of the one person, doing it in front of a group will be easier.
Things to remember: everyone gets nervous during a public performance (so let yourself be nervous). Nervous energy can actually be helpful if channeled properly (theatre experience teaches this). It's okay to make mistakes. If you are just starting out no one will expect a "La Scala" performance (Milan's opera house) so make your mistakes with a smile (everyone loves to see someone who can make a mistake and keep going gracefully).

Well, how do you know if it's embarrasing if you can't get up and do it?
Can you sing? Are you good singer?, I should ask. If you're not good, and know it, that's what brings on the embarrassment. If you love the stage, and do it for you and not for satisfaction from others, then keep doing it. People tend to give more credit to those not so talented, but have the courage to get up there. Force yourself to keep going, as it will only get easier.

You've got to sing in front of a mirror first. ukno watch your moves and the expressions on your face and stuff, if you can sing to yourself, making right all the do's and don'ts, you should be able to sing anywhere, anytime.
Practice makes perfect and that includes singing in front of a crowd.
Practice or rehearsing, will build your confidence, to perform as good as you know how.
Try not to freak out, just do it. Hope this helps.

but i think the easiest way to get over it is to think that all ppl are in there underwears when your singing.
i'll tell you the most embarrassing situation i got into cuz of this:i was at the club and they told me to go on stage and sing with a celeb..so i got onto the stage and sang with him i wouldn't tell you!! i was kinda squeaking!!!,and when i got off the stage it turned out i was kinda good!cuz my parents told me i was good
imagine that!!
maybe when your hearing yourself singing you get sick but it really turns out that your singing is fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
