Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

free antivirus program normally can only detect but unable to remove the infected files. else it is not strong enough and they might be a virus themselves.... if really got such a good free program... the companies like norton, trends.. can just close down.
if it is becos of cost($$) you are looking for a free software.. i recommend you to try Cyber Scrub Antivirus. it comes with a 5 years subscription fee waived, you need not renew its license yearly for 5 years with just one year cost.

I don't recommend getting anything for free, especially security software. Only do that if you honestly cannot afford, or you are too frugal to buy a trusted anti-virus program like Norton or McAfee.

I also recommend AVG Anti-Virus Free. It is totally free for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. It uses less resources and is better than Norton Antivirus in my experience. It can be downloaded from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5 or you can visit http://free.grisoft.com/ for more information.

Try downloading "Download Accelerator Plus" and use the free version, then find for utilities that are also free and useful. It's best to use DAP with IE7.

AVG Free
Be sure not to get the "trial" version, you want the FREE version. Its great software, I prefer it over Norton or McAfee.
