Let me answer that by asking another question|
What makes people think that they are getting a *meal* when they go to MacDonald's?
Repeat a lie often enough and eventually it is accepted as the truth| (e.g. a woman has the right to *control* her own body)|||||
(BTW, "control" is for physical systems, not human beings you degenerate commie!)|
Serve crap, and tell people the lie often enough that it is a meal, and soon the general public will come to believe that MacDonald's serves meals|
And that advertising hype has been quite successful, because MacDonald's is indeed popular|
To get back to what makes things trendy, it follows the same principle|
Most often, the trendy thing in society has nothing to do with the objective good, true, or beautiful, but an illusion has been woven in the public's mind about what constitutes the good, the true, and the beautiful by the advertising industry|
I have seen hideous and laughable garbage passed off as the latest and coolest thing - gaff! gaff! Cough!
Some people who are considered the coolest by others, I see as totally stupid and missing a brick from the load|

popular and trendy , is a hard one.
its like madonna who wore to the awards the necklace design from titanic.another explain with her is she keeps up to date with fashion and whats hot, and keeps remaking herself.
mostly its a bunch of fashion critics or critics , that decide what most ppl think is cool and in this month.
although critics have been wrong if enough ppl like it, they become almost like a mob, which makes the critics wrong rarely.
as for popular, its like high school being the best and being seen, or being the badest but still being seen. the press tends to show us the lives of stars.
but when u think about its almost like highschool all over again . who is pretty, strong, fast, funny, etc.its the peers around them, who give them the power to be popular.because honestly if enough or everyone thought the popular girl/guy wasn't cool. they just be another face in the crowd.
